Hello, I’m Karen

How it all began

My love for the flute began when I was 10 years old when playing the flute was offered to me at school. When I opened the box I couldn’t believe how beautiful it was, and the sound it made was amazing. I started lessons and the world of ensembles, rehearsals, concerts, and music camps opened up.

It was challenging and it was fun. I was hooked.

Secondary school

I was fortunate to attend a secondary school that offered many musical opportunities with wind ensemble, orchestra and school musicals. In addition I auditioned and gained a place in the Sydney Schools Symphonic Wind Ensemble, (SWE), in which I had the opportunity to learn with influential conductors, soloists, composers and educators. SWE performed at events throughout the year as well as touring across NSW.

The highlight was playing Vaughan Williams English Folk Song Suite with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra in The Opera House.

Teaching as a teen

I start teaching as the age of 16 to primary children and continued teaching flute through my studies at university and whilst raising a family. As a lifelong learner I have trained as a Suzuki Teacher, studied Early Childhood Education, and attend professional development workshops, concerts and Masterclasses in order to remain fresh as a teacher.

Music is a gift

The process of developing musical ability helps in developing good learning skills in general through its beauty as an art form is reason enough to learn to play an instrument.

It’s a passion that I love to share with students and why I do it to this day.

My qualifications

  • Bachelor of Music: Melbourne University
  • LMusA: Licentiate Diploma of Music Australia
  • AMusA: Associate Diploma of Music, Australia
  • Suzuki Teacher’s Certificate, Primary
  • Early Childhood Education and Care Certificate 3

  • Current Working With Children Check

I am an accredited teacher with the Western Australian Music Teachers Association, the Victorian Music Teachers Association. I’m a lifelong learner and have 43 years experience teaching the flute.

I have prepared students for AMEB exams and scholarship auditions as well as using the Suzuki Method of teaching.

I love the flute and sharing this beautiful instrument with others is my passion.
